SUBSTITUTES PLEASE BE ADVISED: It is your responsibility to ensure schools are open. Please check the HCPS website for information regarding delays and closures. If schools are delayed (one hour or two hours), plan to arrive at your assignment one or two hours (whichever applies) after the original start time of the assignment.

Typical half day/whole day assignment times for instructional substitutes are as follows:
3 hour early dismissal time 11:20am
3 hour early dismissal time 12:05pm
3 hour early dismissal time 12:50pm
8:50am-12:30pm or 9:00am-12:40pm
12:31pm-4:10pm or 12:41pm-4:20pm
3 hour early dismissal times 1:10 or 1:20pm
*North Harford Middle School operates on the same schedule as North Harford High School.
**The following elementary schools operate on the 4th tier busing schedule: Bakerfield, Bel Air, Deerfield, Forest Lakes, Havre de Grace, Red Pump, and William S. James.
Default job times for the Alternative Education at the Center for Educational Opportunity are 9:15 AM - 4:45 PM.
School nurse substitute full-day assignment job times start 15 minutes earlier and end 8 hours later.
Substitutes are paid for actual hours worked on predefined early dismissal days as outlined on the HCPS calendar. School calendars are posted on HCPS.org.
HCPS 2020-2021 school year early dismissal dates: 09/25/2020, 10/15/2020, 11/11/2020, 11/25/2020, 12/23/2020, 01/15/2021, 02/12/2021, 03/05/2021, 04/01/2021, 05/21/2021
NOTE: These dates apply to all school levels (elementary, middle, and high). It is important to pay attention to the early dismissal dates; the SmartFind assignment you accept may reflect a full day.

Policy Change: - Effective November 1, 2015, substitute teachers MUST: work five (5) days during the school year. This policy change is effective for the 2015-2016 school year and will remain in effect for subsequent school years. Substitutes who work the mandatory five days each school year will receive a reasonable assurance letter at the end of the school year and will be eligible to return the following school year. Substitutes who do not work the mandatory five days will be deactivated as a substitute.
